The territory of Farma Merse
History

Slow walks on ancient tracks, breathing the beauty of nature in the Farma and Merse valleys.
Two main routes joined Siena with the Maremma in prehistoric times. To the east, the Grosseto road goes through Costalpino and San Rocco a Pilli, crossing the Merse at Ponte a Macereto and thence along the left bank, crossing the Farma at Petriolo springs, and proceeding via Roselle and Vetulonia to Grosseto.
To the west, the Massetana leaves Siena and follows the Rosia towards Frosini, Chiusdino and Montieri and thence to Etruscan Populonia in the Gulf of Baratti. Today there are splendid walking tracks along these routes, also suitable for cycling and riding.
